Newspapers
The Daily News is a government newspaper published by the Tanzania Standard Newspapers (TSN). It was established in 1970 when the Government nationalized the Tanganyika Standard Newspapers Limited and its newspaper, The Standard. Daily News is a merger between the Standard and The Nationalist that rolled off the press on April 17, 1964.
The Guardian is published by the Guardian Newspaper Ltd. It was established in 1995 (registration date: May 3rd 1993).
Nipashe newspaper is published by the Guardian Limited, which is also owned by the IPP Group Limited. Nipashe was among the first newspapers to be established after the liberalisation of the media sector. It was established in 1994.
Mwananchi newspaper is published by the Mwananchi Communication Ltd. It was registered with the Registrar of Newspapers in 2000. Mwananchi newspaper is considered as the leading Kiswahili-language newspaper in the country.
The Citizen newspaper was registered with the Registrar of Newspaper in 2004. Like Mwananchi newspaper, it is published by the Mwananchi Communication Ltd. It has recently been covering more of business stories that it used to be. The change is intended to position the newspaper as one of the authoritative publication on business reporting in the country.
Jamhuri – a weekly newspaper – was established in 2011. It is published by the Jamhuri Media Limited, which also publishes a monthly investigative magazine, The Republican, and an Online TV, Jamhuri TV. The newspaper is guided by a vision to be “the leading investigative media house in Tanzania and Africa.”
Zanzibar Leo newspaper is owned by the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar through the Corporation of Government Newspapers. The Corporation established by Act No. 11 of 2008, is tasked to administer, control and manage government newspapers.
Habari Leo is a government Swahili newspaper published by the Tanzania Standard Newspapers (TSN). It was established in 2005 to cater for the general public. Habari Leo is the Swahili translation of its sister newspaper nameplate ‘Daily News’.
Raia Mwema is a weekly newspaper.
Mwanahalisi Online is an online newspaper owned by Hali Halisi Publishers Limited (HHPL). The online version was introduced following the ban of Mwanahalisi print edition by the Government.
Safari FM is a local radio station based in Mtwara region, the southern part of Tanzania. The radio, whose coverage reaches nine regions (https://safarimedia.co.tz/about-safari.html), is owned by Radio Safari Limited – a firm incorporated with the Business Registration and Licensing Agency (BRELA).
National Radio
TBC Taifa is the state radio under the Tanzania Broadcasting Corporation (TBC). TBC was established in 2008 after the merger between the former government radio RTD (Radio Tanzania Dar es Salaam) and TvT (Television ya Taifa). TBC Taifa’s mandate is largely to inform and educate the audience on national policies and developments. The radio is among the broadcast stations owned by TBC; others are TBC FM, TBC International, TBC1, and the recently introduced TV station TBC Safari Channel whose mandate is to promote tourism.
Radio Free Africa (RFA
was established in 1995. The radio, which is headquartered in Mwanza around Lake Zone, is owned by the Sahara Media Group Ltd (SMG). The company also owns two other media outlets namely Star TV and Kiss FM.
Clouds FM popularly known as “The People’s Station” is a privately owned by Clouds Media Group (CMG). The group runs Choice FM, Clouds TV, and Coconut FM. Clouds FM, which was established in 1998, is guided by an infotainment approach in its programming. It is regarded as the leading radio station among youths in the country.
Radio One started its operation in 1994. It is one among the radio stations owned by the IPP Media Limited. Other media outlets owned by IPP Media include Capital Radio, ITV, East Africa Radio, East Africa TV etc. The radio broadcasts 24-hours from Dar es Salaam.
The history of ZBC Radio dates back to 1951, when Sauti ya Unguja was established. Soon after the Union between Tanganyika and Zanzibar, Sauti ya Unguja was renamed Sauti ya Tanzania Zanzibar (STZ). In 2013, STZ and Television Zanzibar (TVZ) were merged through Act No. 4 of 2013 to establish the Zanzibar Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC), in which ZBC Radio is part of it.
Local Radio
Micheweni Community Radio (94.7) is the first community radio in Zanzibar islands. The radio, located in Pemba Island, was launched in 2010, with UNESCO’s support through UN Joint Programme 5 on capacity building for Zanzibar. The radio was started with the aim of raising awareness on girl’s education, a direct result of the very high dropout rates of girls, but also as an important medium of building and maintaining peace in the islands.
Zenj FM (96.8) is the first private radio station in Zanzibar. The radio, located in Unguja Island, was officially licensed by the Broadcasting Authority on the 1st of July 2005, and launched its operation on the 8th of July 2005.
CG FM (88.5) went on air 2004. The radio’s mission is to “combat illiteracy and facilitating knowledge transfer through dissemination of various information and advocacy,” with a vision to contribute to the Tanzanian community by helping the ignorant and poor Tanzanians to access information and supplement government’s efforts to alleviate poverty. The radio is located in Tabora region.
Dodoma FM (98.4) is guided by a mission to enrich people’s lives with programmes that inform, educate and entertain. Its vision is to promote economic stability, good governance, resilience and a sense of community beyond the walls of the radio station. The radio, which started broadcasting in 2010, is located in Dodoma, the national capital city.
Pangani FM (107.7) is a registered community radio station located in Pangani District, in Tanga region. The radio, operated by Uzima Kwa Sanaa (UZIKWASA) organization, started its broadcasting 2011. The radio aims to give voice to the challenges facing the community in development matters and to suggest solutions to these challenges.
Highlands FM (92.5) is registered as a commercial radio station operating in Mbeya region. The radio started its operation in 2010. It aims to address all aspects of business, commerce and development in the Southern Region of the country.
Arusha 1 FM (101.6) is registered as a commercial radio station, and started its operation in 2011. The radio, located in Arusha region, is targeting audience between 18 and 35 years of age.
TV
Azam TV is one of the recently founded TV stations, having 6 years in the market to-date. Founded in 2013 as a private digital satellite service, it has grown to penetrate the TV market in Tanzania. The TV is owned by Azam Media Limited, a subsidiary company of Bakhresa Group of Companies.
Formerly TvT (Televisheni ya Taifa), TBC1 is the government television under the Tanzania Broadcasting Corporation (TBC). Like TBC Taifa, the station’s mandate is to inform and educate the audience on national policies and developments.
Independent Television (ITV) was the second television station to be registered in Tanzania Mainland after CTN. It started broadcasting in 1994. The television station is owned by IPP Media Limited, and is regarded as the leading television station in the country.
Ayo TV is registered with TCRA as an Online Content Services (Television). It is owned AYO TV TZA Company Limited. The TV is hosted at Millardayo.com which is regarded as one of the leading general news platform in the country. The platform started in 2012.
Blogs / Forum
Jamiiforums is registered with TCRA as an Online Content Services (Online Forums). The forum was started as a platform for Tanzanian society to engage in free discussions on wide range of socio-economic and political issues. The forum, which started as Jambo Forums in 2006, is widely viewed as the leading online forum in the country.
